Leda by Marie-Esther Leda by Marie-Esther
Watercolours on cardboard, size slightly bigger than an A4

My very first time with watercolours mostly (and a white gel pen)!

Reference picture: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi… by the talented I am not Ana www.facebook.com/iamnotana

Title inspired by Greek Mythology, in particular by the character of Leda (therefore the feather in her hands)

Princess Leda was admired by Zeus, who seduced her in the guise of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. Their consummation, on the same night as Leda lay with her husband Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs from which hatched Helen (later known as the beautiful "Helen of Troy"), Clytemnestra, and Castor and Pollux (also known as the Dioscuri (Διόσκουροι).

Leda and the swan and Leda and the egg were popular subjects in ancient art. In the post-classical arts, it became a potent source of inspiration.

A sudden blow: the great wings beating still
Above the staggering girl, her thighs caressed
By the dark webs, her nape caught in his bill,
He holds her helpless breast upon his breast.

How can those terrified vague fingers push
The feathered glory from her loosening thighs?
And how can body, laid in that white rush,
But feel the strange heart beating where it lies?

A shudder in the loins engenders there
The broken wall, the burning roof and tower
And Agamemnon dead.
           Being so caught up,
So mastered by the brute blood of the air,
Did she put on his knowledge with his power
Before the indifferent beak could let her drop?

Leda and the swan-William Butler Yeats

What I like best about this piece is the contrast between softness and craggedness, between the tear stains and the red red lips and finger nails. I do think that goes very well with the story of Leda and the swan. I also love this sentimental touch holding a feather cradled in her hands. All in all a very impressive work even more so as the first attempt with this medium.

All that dripping blue is a pretty interesting touch :noes:
It makes me think she's covered in tears! :nuu:
You sure have done well with the hands and feather
Her face is pretty expressive too :o
And the hair seems nice as well :dummy:

This is beautiful  I really love the colours and the addition of the splatters/drips, they add a very nice effect. The way that you have done the hair is also very effective. Personally, the only thing that I am not too keen on is the neck. I am guessing it has been edited digitally and that makes it stand out quite a bit against the rest of the image.

It's so rare to see traditionnal work :3 I'm always happy to see that :3
And painting :'
The pose is beautiful but the whole thing is kinda sad. The strikes you add
add a litteral sad effect on it, like it's raining painting on the canvas. You did a great job.
And the shape of the frame is a nice idea :3

Nice one! The smudging strokes give the sensation of her being through a window to protect her from a rainy day :)

I'm really big fan of Leda theme, not so of portrait in this style but it's obvious you're master of this technique so the overall look of the piece gives me some very calming and nice feeling. It's great how you used pen with the watercolor, and the harmony you've created!!

I like the way you made the red stand even more out with the cold colors in the
bg and her skin. She looks cold, longing and alone. But is she alone alone? Or is
it in her mind? The dreamy sad state in this picture kinda gets to me, since I've
been feeling a little down lately. The poem is beautiful and I think you did a
splendid job with the watercolors. The textures you make in it is even better
up close, witch is kinda hard when it comes to something so stubborn as
watercolor. (I argue with it all the time ^_^'')

Love it, and can really "feel" it.
